When there’s no place left to go
How Sarah made her way back home
Growing up in Calgary, Sarah could not get along with her mother and did not know her father. She left home at the young age of 14 and tried living on the streets.
She decided to hitchhike to Toronto, where her cousin lived. However, when the cousin eventually kicked her out, she had no place left to go. Sarah heard about Sancta Maria House and decided to give it a try.
They never gave up on her
Initially, she hated the structure and rules; she recalls cursing at the staff and treating them rudely. But they responded with kindness and never gave up on her. She was able to return to school and receive credits toward her diploma.
All the while, she was encouraged to reconnect with her mother through regular phone calls. At the end of her stay, she returned to Calgary and restored their relationship.
