You help men like Desmond, who never expected he would end up in his circumstances in adulthood. While his childhood was challenging, growing up in poverty, he excelled at school, completed university and began a successful career. He had good friends, earned a good salary, and simply, life felt good.
But then everything collapsed. He lost his job without warning, bills piled up, and before he could catch his breath, he lost one of his closest friends to an overdose right before his eyes. The grief was unbearable, and Desmond spiraled into depression, eventually turning to substance abuse to numb the pain.
Soon Desmond found himself on the street, feeling completely lost and questioning his purpose in life. Eventually, his body couldn’t handle the weight of his grief and he ended up in the hospital.
That’s when you provided him with a second chance
Desmond was soon referred to St. Michael’s Homes, a Catholic Charities agency you support through ShareLife. Here, he received treatment for his addictions, transitional housing and access to a psychotherapist to help him process his traumas.
Thanks to your compassionate heart, Desmond was able to recover his life and reconnect with his family. By rebuilding his relationships with loved ones, going back to work, and returning to independent living, Desmond saw that life could be good again.
